Intro to Internet Phone Service (VOIP)

Another name for internet phone service is VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). This is a type of phone service that people can call from using their computer, a microphone, and speakers.

Usage and Equipment Tips

The easiest way to talk online using a VOIP service is to use a headset with a microphone attached to it. Some headsets require you to push down on a lever or button while you are talking. However, the newer ones are not like this but rather you can talk without being required to press anything while talking and/or listening.

You can of course also use some types of internet phone service software with speakers and a desktop microphone. However, everyone can hear your conversation if you do not have headphones plugged into your computer speakers and it’s harder to engage in a conversation while using a desktop mic and speakers verses having a communications headset.

Usually VOIP phones work best when you have a high-speed internet connection such as cable or DSL service. They do not work the best when using wireless, unless you have a reliable enough of a wireless service in your community. However, it may depend upon the nature of the type of internet phone service you use. Either way, VoIP is usually clearer and crisper than the standard residential phone service landline, due to it's digital nature.

Types of Internet Phones

Certain VOIP services require a web-based subscription, which often is paid monthly. Yahoo or Skype are the best examples of these, but there are countless other types of web-based and downloadable computer software that can be used for this purpose.

Usually the services that require a web-based subscription also require software to be downloaded onto your computer for use. Usually in the case of using Yahoo or Skype, this is when headsets and/or speakers with microphones is necessary.

Other types require the plug in of a physical device along with a telephone receiver. The Magic Jack that everyone has been talking about and using more of lately is an example of this.

It is a USB plug and play type of device and it requires the loading of a web-based software in order to run it. There are updates you can acquire from time to time while using it.

The prices of VOIP or other type of Internet phone service are very comparable. However, in some instances it may be cheaper to purchase a physical USB calling device into your computer because you can pay as low as $20.00 per year to use it.

On the other hand, if you do not use Internet phone service that much you can purchase prepaid phone services. Then, you can make calls as you wish and only pay per call. This is often a very inexpensive way to make international calls.
