About Local and Long Distance Providers

There is a vast sea of local and long distance providers. They provide all kinds of services to people who need to communicate on a regular basis, whether it is by regular landline phone, VOIP, or some other means.

Plan Availability

Not all local and long distance providers serve every location. Either that or they may but only under a different name. It is up to you to find out what the current company’s name is.

To give you an idea, in Northeast Wisconsin/Midwest there is AT&T which used to be SBC, and before that Bell (either Wisconsin Bell or Illinois Bell). Currently there still is a Bellsouth company, but now it is under a different name in the Midwestern and northwestern states.

There also is what is now known as CentryTel, which served Parts of Southwestern Wisconsin as well as surrounding areas. This is now CentryLink because it had merged with Embarq.

There are also several other land line phone companies that have emerged over the past 10 to 15 years as well. Sage is one of them and so is Quest, Cavalier, and others. Note however that the names of phone companies have a tendency to change quite often.

Therefore, you are going to need to call and find out what is available in your immediate area. Various residential phone companies may be listed in your phone book. However, the best way to seek this information would probably to do so online as well using simple location search tools.

Phone Company Selection

Part of what makes you want to choose specific phone companies depends upon the services you need. For instance, perhaps you want to find a company who offers both unlimited and long distance services for a low rate.

Maybe you need high-speed internet service. Either that or you are looking for a company that does not charge you to put in a phone line just so you can access DSL.

You might want a company that offers reasonable international rates. This might be especially important if you make frequent calls to clients who live overseas. It may also be necessary even if you make quite a bit of long distance calls within your own country.

Speaking of which, for some reason long distance calls within someone’s home state are often more expensive. If you can find a company that offers lower rates on statewide calling you have it made.

You might also choose a phone company or other local or long distance provider based on additional features. For instance, perhaps you need a phone card or three-way, four-way or other type of conference calling.

Types of Phone Services

Some land lines phone companies may also offer digital phone. This is a type of web-based phone service that is also run through a landline phone line. It may also be known as VOIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol.

Sometimes you might be sold plug and play devices that you would attach to your computer. These allow you to make unlimited calls for a very small yearly fee. All that is needed is a phone that is plugged into the device, which is plugged into your computer.

There are also some web-based VOIP services available. These are run independently from major landline phone companies and usually require a headset and/or speaker and microphone. Of course, along with this is usually some type of Internet service if you are using any type of Internet-based phone.

Keep in mind that dialup Internet is pretty much obsolete and the minimum phone speed required is DSL, and many people are opting for Cable, Satellite, or Wireless which is often provided through long distance companies.
